The Weekly Stand-Up

What is a weekly stand up? The weekly stand up is a brief 15 minute meeting held while literally standing around the main work table. A weekly "stand up" helps to keep daily work and business matters in check. The meeting can be called by anyone but is usually called by the manager.  This type of meeting is typically held no more than one time per week. The manager usually texts the others to give a heads up that there will be a quick stand-up that day, usually before the lunch hour.  This way, everyone is aware that at some point in time, all will stop work and gather around the table for 15 minutes. An example of what is discussed at the stand-up is inspecting and commenting on one another's work, quality control issues, customer service matters, quick educational bites or scheduling interruptions - "so and so has a dental appointment and will be leaving early. Who will watch the store or answer the phone?"

A respectful, safe, environment is crucial to creativity.  Honesty is also important.  And don't forget to have fun!  Working together, understanding each persons' strengths and creative process, and putting all ego aside is usually something learned and not exactly instinctive. Meetings are often dreaded or feared.  Not so at Sole Survivor. While the interruption to the day's work is not always welcome, the meetings are needed.  Having a set time to have a quick conversation with everyone present, reduces the need for separate and repetitive conversations throughout the week.  This saves time and also brings clarity to everyone at once.

The weekly stand up is a great way to quickly touch base. The key is to stay fully committed to that 15 minute time slot and the talking points.  Set a timer.  And talk fast.

The weekly stand-up - it WORKS!
